Bruton senior boys soccer player Miguel Martinez capped off his senior season by earning Group 2A All-State honors Tuesday.

The Bruton midfielder was named a second-team All-State selection by the Virginia High School League.

Martinez tied teammate Lanson Fontaine with a team-high 15 goals while adding seven assists for the Panthers. Martinez also led Bruton with a team-high 79 shots, which eclipsed Fontaine and Michael Wilson who each had 57 shots.

Bruton coach Luke Taylor said Martinez came up big for the Panthers in the postseason, scoring seven goals during five postseason games after scoring eight in the regular season.

“He stepped up huge in the playoffs with almost doubling his goal total in the playoffs alone,” Taylor said of Martinez. “He gave us life in the Riverheads game. You could see his trust in his teammates and he made his teammates better.”

Taylor said Martinez grew as a player during his senior season, gaining better field vision and learning to create chances for his teammates.

A transfer from Warhill during his junior season, Martinez quickly bought in to the Bruton system and became a key player for the Panthers. Eventually, Martinez earned captain responsibilities and developed a good working relationship with Taylor.

“He’s very coachable,” Taylor said of Martinez. “When he has gotten a card here and there for fouls, we have a good relationship so I’ll let him cool down a little bit. He’s able to refocus and get back with the team. He loves the game and loves his teammates. He’s a joy to coach just like the rest of the boys.”
