A new restaurant is bringing a Mexican flair to Capitol Landing Road.
Cancun Mexican Grill is opening its doors at 814 Capitol Landing Road.
Spearheaded by Suraj Barodia and Edgar Maldonado, the new restaurant is located in the restaurant section of the former La Quinta Inn on Capitol Landing Road, which is currently being renovated into a Mainstay Suites.
Barodia said the new restaurant held a soft opening last week, and would offer a new flavor of Mexican food to the area.
“What we’re doing is a little more authentic style of Mexican food,” he said. “It’s a simple menu with a lot of good food.”
Barodia said the restaurant is still waiting to receive approval for a license from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to serve liquor, but would have beer and wine available for purchase by patrons.
The Barodia family owns and operates the hotel at 814 Capitol Landing Road. Barodia said the building had a dedicated restaurant space, which had been infrequently occupied over the last several years.
“Jack’s Pizza was here before, and people loved it,” Barodia said.
Instead of leasing out the space again, Barodia said he decided to open his own restaurant at the hotel.
“In the hotel business, it’s a big perk for guests to have a restaurant on-site,” Barodia said.
Barodia said he is focused on Cancun Mexican Grill being a success with a focus on a fresh foods and an authentic style.
“People love the atmosphere,” he said. “We want to offer that and a different style of Mexican food to our guests.”
While the restaurant is currently operational, Barodia said he is eyeing a July 1 grand opening for Cancun Mexican Grill.
The restaurant is the second Mexican restaurant to open in the City of Williamsburg in the last year. La Terraza Mexican Grill opened on Richmond Road at the former site of Ruby Tuesday’s in September 2014.
