York High School to Celebrate Class of 2015

York HighThe 238 members of York High School’s class of 2015 will graduate in a commencement ceremony this Friday.

The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., the last of four graduation ceremonies that day at William & Mary Hall in the City of Williamsburg.

Fifty percent of the graduating seniors plan to attend four-year colleges or universities in the fall, 32 percent will attend two-year colleges, 10 percent plan to join the workforce, and four percent will enlist in the armed services.

Forty-six members of the graduating class earned more than $3.7 million in scholarships. A full list of scholarships won by the graduates is available here.

The valedictorian of the class of 2015 is Alexander Liang, who will attend the University of Virginia in the fall. The salutatorian is Georgetown University-bound Min Ji Doh.

Name one thing you learned in high school that you didn’t expect to learn: As long as you are willing learn, it is okay to not know something – even teachers don’t know 100% of the subject they teach.
Name one person who has influenced you and why: I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Alan Pope, a researcher at NASA Langley Research Center. He showed me what to expect from a job as a scientist.
Is there a teacher you would most like to thank and why: My programming teacher Mr. Bryce Davis has been an extremely positive influence on my high school life. His class is very focused on independent study and has inspired me to be a more critical thinker.
Favorite quote or catchphrase: I have no clue what I’m doing.
Most cherished high school memory: Hanging out with friends, messing around with each other and playing video games.

Name one thing you learned in high school that you didn’t expect to learn: I learned that I was somehow capable of waking up at 6:30 am every morning, 5 days a week, for four years.
Name one person who has influenced you and why: My mom – She has been the support that I needed throughout my high school years, and she embodies benevolence and forgiveness even when I forget to reciprocate these characteristics back to her.
Is there a teacher you would most like to thank and why: Dr. Miller – With English as a second language, English classes were not always my forte. However, she has not only taught me English (very well), but has also encouraged me to embrace my differences and utilize them to create something unique.
Favorite quote or catchphrase: “Don’t be stingy, vote for Minji!”
Most cherished high school memory: MUN – I’ve done MUN since freshman year. At first I signed up for the club because you get to stay at the hotel for the weekend with your friends. I soon realized my passion for politics more I went to the conferences. MUN helped me discover my interest as well as strengthen my friendships.
