Bruton had four boys soccer players given 2A East All-Region honors on Wednesday, including one who secured first-team honors.

Miguel Martinez, who was named to the first team, helped lead Bruton to its first region tournament appearance since 1997 before the Panthers fell to Riverheads by a 5-2 final in the 2A East semifinals.

Martinez came up big for the Panthers in the postseason, scoring seven goals over five games after scoring eight in the regular season. He also assisted on seven goals.

“He went through a stretch in the middle of the year where he wasn’t scoring goals. You could tell he was itching to get the goal, but it didn’t change how hard he worked, earning the ball back or assisting a teammate,” Bruton coach Luke Taylor said of Martinez. “He stepped up at the right time and scored some big goals for us. It’s never one person, but he was a big factor why we made the deep run this season.”

Three other Bruton players were named to the all-region second team.

Forward Lanson Fontaine earned second-team all-region honors after scoring 15 goals for Bruton this season.

Midfielder Hunter Embry scored four goals and six assists for the Panthers, including the game-winning goal against Maggie Walker in the Conference 33 championship game.

Defenseman Sharif Donkor also won all-region honors. Taylor said he was a defensive standout for Bruton for the entire season.

Taylor also gave credit to his players who did not receive regional honors.

“I’m proud of all my boys, even the ones that didn’t make it,” he said. “They stepped up in every game situation and we were a complete team. The boys stepped up all year long.”
