Despite recording more total hits than Brentsville, Warhill was unable to string its hits together for runs during Monday’s 3-0 loss in the 3A East championship game at Spotsylvania High School.

Brentsville jumped on the Lions early, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice squeeze from Leah Shipp and an RBI double from Bridget Mason.

Shipp hurt Warhill again in the bottom of the third inning, sending an RBI double to left field to put Brentsville up 3-0.

After allowing four hits and three earned runs through the first three innings, Warhill pitcher Keely Rochard settled down and allowed one hit through the rest of the contest.

“She pulled it together to give us a chance,” Warhill Coach Meredith Powell said. “She’s done a tremendous job of keeping us in games.”

While Rochard settled down on the mound, the Lions offense remained stagnant.

Warhill’s best scoring chances came in the top of the second inning when Kasey Tomes singled to right field and put Hayley Schulz on third base but a lineout to second base ended the inning.

“We couldn’t string it together,” Powell said. “We haven’t been the away team in a long time. I think there were a lot of nerves going into it. We got off to a rocky start and they came out on top. We couldn’t catch up.”

The Lions had their last scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh inning as Lindsey Davis opened the inning with a single to center field. On the next at-bat, Tomes grounded out to the pitcher, but not before Davis reached second.

Walters stepped to the plate and hit a deep ground ball to the shortstop that allowed her to reach first base and put Davis on third. A groundout by Kieran McClure on the next at-bat ended the scoring threat and the game. By not scoring a run in the game, the Lions were held scoreless for the first time all season.

Despite the loss, Warhill still advances to the Virginia High School League Softball Championships where the Lions (22-4) will take on 3A West champions Brookville at 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty University.
