Virginia State Police are reporting a 17-year-old James City County boy died after losing control of his car while exiting off the highway Friday.

The driver, Carlos Alexander Tobar of the 8800 block of Pocahontas Trail in Grove, was driving a 1998 Honda in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 Friday afternoon when he took the Camp Peary exit ramp at a high rate of speed, Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said.

Tobar lost control of the car, ran off the road and struck several trees, Anaya said.

Police responded to the scene at 1:40 p.m. and found the teen suffering major injuries. He was taken to Sentara Williamsburg, then transferred to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, where he died.

Speed played a factor in the crash, Anaya said, and it is unknown whether Tobar was wearing his seatbelt.

Tobar’s family members have been notified.
