The Jamestown girls tennis team had a successful first day of competition in the 4A South singles and doubles tournament at Huntington Park in Newport News on Monday.
Jamestown’s lone No. 1 singles player Anna Walter guaranteed her trip to the 4A state tournament by defeating Deep Creek’s Keya Patel 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Jamiah Lewis of Dinwiddie 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.
The pair of wins means Walter will play Midlothian’s Stephanie Olson in the region finals Wednesday.
Olson knocked out the other Historic Triangle competitor in Monday’s competition, Grafton’s Winnie Zhang.
Zhang advanced out of the quarterfinals by defeating Churchland’s Kennae Gainey 6-0, 6-0 before falling to Olson 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinal.
In the doubles competition, both Jamestown teams advanced past the quarterfinal round to reach the region semifinals. A win in the semifinal guarantees a place in the 4A state tournament.
The top Jamestown pairing of Walter and Britney Herard cruised past Deep Creek’s Patel and Lyncia Berry 6-0, 6-1. The second Jamestown duo of Katie Hunt and Alisha Kohli took down Booker T. Washington’s Jonai Smith and Jazmyn Al-Amin 6-3, 6-0 to reach the semifinal.
Walter and Herard will take on the Midlothian team of Grace Clark and Courtney Price, while Hunt and Kohli will play the Midlothian duo of Allyson Kearns and Sarah Holland on Wednesday.
