Two Jamestown doubles team advanced to the 4A South semifinals during the opening day of play in the 4A South tournament at Huntington Park in Newport News on Monday.
Jamestown’s top doubles team of Derrick Neilson and Grayson DeBerry got past the Deep Creek doubles team of Jacob Oliveras and Andrew Wantz 6-0, 6-0.
The second Jamestown doubles team of Rohan Kohly and Brad Mahaffey easily defeated Lake Taylor’s De’Mon McKee and De’Andre McKee 6-0, 6-2 to reach Wednesday’s semifinal round.
Any doubles team to win Wednesday will play in the regional final later that day, as well as guarantee a spot in the 4A state tournament.
The two Historic Triangle singles players did not fare as well in Monday’s tournament. DeBerry won 6-0, 6-0 against Oliveras before dropping a tough semifinal match against Hanover’s Zach Palmer 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3.
Tabb’s Jimmy Qing also advanced to the regional semifinal, defeating De’Mon McKee 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinal. Like DeBerry, Qing suffered defeat in the semifinals, this time at the hands of Midlothian’s Matthew Cousins by a final of 6-4, 6-4.
The losses for DeBerry and Qing mean their singles season comes to a close one win shy of reaching the state tournament.
