The York girls tennis team repeated as 3A East champions on Friday, taking down James Monroe 5-3 on the road in the championship match.

“They exceeded my expectations. They played great today,” York Coach Steve Fisher said. “A huge bonus for us was Julie Zhou winning that tiebreak to win our third match in singles. I was optimistic for the first time all match.”

Zhou, the Falcons’ No. 6 singles player, earned a hard-fought win that concluded with a 9-7 tiebreak victory to knot the singles score at 3-3.

With a strong doubles lineup, Fisher said he was confident in his team’s ability to defeat James Monroe in doubles.

His confidence was not misplaced, as his No. 1 and No. 3 singles pairings cruised to easy victories to give York the championship.

York (13-1) will now prepare to an unknown opponent in the opening round of the Group 3A state tournament on June 8.

After finishing as runner-up in last year’s state tournament, Fisher is hoping for a different result this year.

“We made it to the state title game last year and lost to a really good team, hopefully we’ll make it there again this year with a different result,” Fisher said.
