The Williamsburg Starz Gold 10U fast-pitch travel softball team will hold tryouts Thursday for girls ages 8 to 11.
Williamsburg Starz Gold coach Tony Short says this special tryout is a unique opportunity for girls looking to take their softball skills to the next level.
“We are currently first place in the state and we are looking for a few more girls to complete our roster,” he said. “Normally the tryouts are in late summer, but we’ve had a couple girls move out of town.”
Those interested in trying out for the team will be doing so for a six-tournament schedule this summer, as opposed to committing for an entire 12-month season.
As well as having a limited commitment period, Short said this tryout would be a good stepping stone for girls who want to test their skills and get a feel for what travel softball would be like.
An assistant coach for Jamestown’s varsity softball team, Short said playing travel softball helps prepare girls for the rigors of high school and college play down the road.
“It’s very fun and it’s very competitive,” Short said of travel softball. “The Starz Gold organization is one where the ultimate goal is to get our girls into college on a scholarship, and that starts at the younger levels.”
Williamsburg Starz Gold is looking to add three to four girls to the summer roster, which is expected to compete against some of the best travel teams in the state.
In August, the current Williamsburg Starz Gold team will move up an age group and a new 10U team will be created in its place. Short said girls who attend Thursday’s tryouts would be considered to workout and train with the team in the fall.
The tryout, which will be held at Jamestown High School at 5:45 p.m., is free of charge and those trying out should be dressed appropriately to play softball.
