Boys Soccer Roundup: Bruton Earns First Regional Berth Since 1997

The Bruton boys soccer team earned its first regional bid since 1997 by shutting out Windsor 5-0 at home Wednesday in the Conference 33 semifinals.

Lanson Fontaine helped pace the Bruton offense, recording a hat trick for the Panthers. Not to be outdone, Miguel Martinez added two goals as the two accounted for all of Bruton’s scoring.

So dominant was Bruton, goalkeeper Travis Matthews did not have to make a save in the game.

Before advancing to the regional tournament, the Panthers (9-8) will travel to take on Maggie Walker for the Conference 33 championship Friday.

Smithfield Edges Grafton in Penalty Kicks

The Grafton boys soccer team saw its season come to a crushing conclusion on the road Wednesday.

The Clippers battled with Smithfield for 95 minutes before succumbing to the Packers in penalty kicks during a 2-1 loss in the Conference 19 semifinals.

After going up 1-0, Grafton gave up a game-tying goal to Smithfield with 26:18 left in the second half.

Grafton’s season¬†(8-3-4) comes to a lose one game shy of making the Conference 19 championship game and earning a berth to the 4A South tournament.

Individual statistics for this game were not reported.
