Lafayette’s baseball team took advantage of early scoring to put away Southampton 8-4 in the Conference 25 semifinals Wednesday.

The Rams started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on an Andre Lipcius RBI double to right field. On the next at-bat, Daniel Blankinship also delivered an RBI double to right field.

Jeremiah Antle closed the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single to second base that put the Rams up 3-0.

The Rams did more damage in the bottom of the second as two runners scored on a Southampton error.

Trailing 5-0, Southampton responded in the top of the third with three runs to cut the deficit to two.

Lafayette responded in kind in the bottom of the inning as Antle delivered an RBI triple to right field before Austin Cohn hit a sacrifice fly that brought Antle home.

Lipcius pitched a solid game on the mound, throwing a complete game and striking out seven batters. Of the four runs allowed, none were earned.

The Rams (15-5) will travel to take on top-seeded Colonial Heights in the Conference 25 championship game Thursday. The win also means Lafayette will automatically advance to the 3A East tournament.

York Edged by Colonial Heights in Conference Semis

York came up just short of knocking off top-seeded Colonial Heights in the Conference 25 semifinals on Wednesday, dropping a tight 4-3 decision on the road.

The Falcons got off on the right foot after scoring a pair of runs on wild pitches in the top of the first inning.

Colonial Heights responded quickly in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single and a York fielding error that tied the game at 2-2.

In the top of the sixth, York’s Justin Parrish delivered a clutch RBI double to left field that put the Falcons on top 3-2.

A Falcons fielding error in the bottom of the sixth proved costly, allowing two Colonial Heights runs to score.

By all accounts, York pitcher Gabe Simmons threw a solid game. Simmons threw all six innings for the Falcons, allowing only one earned run and one hit while striking out six batters.

The loss brings York’s season (12-9) to a close short of the Falcons advancing to the regional tournament.
