The Grafton softball team rode its early runs to get past Powhatan 5-2 on the road during the Conference 19 semifinals Tuesday.
Grafton’s Christa Hall opened the game in commanding fashion, belting a solo home run over the left-field fence during the game’s opening at-bat.
Two at-bats later, Marika Whitlatch hit an RBI single to right field that gave way to a Kayley Cox RBI later that inning.
Jessie Sprouse extended Grafton’s lead in the top of the second by reaching base on an error by Powhatan’s center fielder that allowed Kierson Tavares to score. Later that inning, Whitlatch recorded her second RBI of the game coming off a single to right field.
Powhatan recorded runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings, but could not muster enough offense against Cox, who struck out seven batters and allowed five hits.
