Grafton’s Ricks Dearing and Tabb’s Robbie Barrett each threw complete games during Tuesday’s Conference 19 semifinals.

At the end of the game, Grafton came out on top in a hard-fought 4-3 road win.

Evan Sperling did most of the heavy lifting for Grafton on offense, hitting a pair of doubles that were good for a pair of RBIs. His teammate Jordan Sprouse chipped in a 2-for-4 performance from the plate and an RBI in the win.

Despite recording more hits than Grafton and the Clippers committing four errors, the Tigers could not muster enough consistent offense with runners in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base in the game.

Grafton (12-8) will advance to the Conference 19 championship game against Powhatan on Thursday. The Clippers also automatically advance to the 4A South tournament.

Tabb (12-9) ends its season in disappointing fashion, dropping four consecutive games to close the year.

Powhatan Stuns Jamestown to Reach Conference 19 Finals

Jamestown, the top seed in the Conference 19 tournament, was upset by Powhatan 5-3 at home Tuesday.

The Eagles (16-4) held the Indians at bay for most of the game, but gave up five runs in the top of the third inning.

Evan Lowery did his best to keep Jamestown’s season alive, going 2-for-4 from the plate and driving in all of Jamestown’s runs. Lowery put Jamestown on top in the bottom of the first inning, belting a two-run home run to center field.

Powhatan took advantage of a pair of Jamestown errors and timely hitting to string together all five runs in the third inning, which proved enough for the Indians to secure the win.

A Lowery RBI single in the bottom of the fourth helped keep Jamestown within striking distance of Powhatan. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with two outs and two runners on base, Kevin Mooney flew out to second base for the game’s final out.

The loss brings Jamestown’s season to a close short of earning a berth to the 4A South regional tournament.
