Mary Evelyn Hartnett Hazen, 102, past president of the Virginia Museum of Fine Art

Mary Evelyn Hartnett Hazen, of Williamsburg, passed away in her sleep at home Sunday, May 24, 2015. She was 102 and under the care of Grace Hospice of Williamsburg.

She was born in Stafford, Kansas on 5 Feb 1913. Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Jessie Stone Hartnett; father, Andrew W. Hartnett; husband, William F. Hazen, of Stafford, Kansas; son, Drew H. Hazen of Montgomery, Alabama; and daughter, Sarah H. Idele of Williamsburg, Virginia.

She lived most of her life in Richmond, Virginia and moved to Williamsburg in 2002 to live with her daughter and son-in-law after major surgery. Mary attended the University of Kansas and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta (Kappa Chapter), Mayflower Society, Country Club of Virginia and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. She was also a board member of the Tuckahoe Women’s Club (Richmond) and council of the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, as well as a member and past president of the Sleepy Hollow Garden Club, the Cavalier Club (twice). She volunteered her time every week for 31 years at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Mary is survived by her son-in-law, John R. Idele, of Williamsburg; daughter-in-law, Shelia Hazen Patterson (Fred), of Montgomery, Alabama; grandchildren, Michael H. Cullinan of Williamsburg, Kimberly H. Fry (Mike) of Prattville, Alabama, Amanda H. Finlay (Robb) of Montgomery, Alabama; four great-grandchildren; and niece, Kathleen White (Beau) of Rosanky, Texas.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2015, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Ave, Richmond, Virginia 23226.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to the Grace Hospice of Williamsburg, 263 McLaws Circle, Williamsburg, VA 23185 or to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Ave, Richmond, VA 23226.
