Leading 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Bruton gave up three runs that eventually led to a 6-5 road defeat against Mathews on Wednesday.
After falling down 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Bruton responded with two runs in the top of the fourth thanks to RBIs from Nate Florence and Tyler Brown.
The Panthers saw Mathews respond for two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
Once again, Bruton responded in the next half inning. Bruton’s Kyle Morgan reached base on a fielder’s choice that brought in Alec Pallas to tie the game at 3-3. Two at-bats later, Tyler Floyd grounded out to shortstop, but not before another run crossed home.
The Panthers added one more run in the top of the sixth on an Alec Pallas RBI single to left field that put Bruton up 5-3.
Two fielding errors by Bruton accounted for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. An infield single later that inning gave the Blue Devils the game-winning run.
With their regular season finished, Bruton (2-17) will await its opponent in Tuesday’s Conference 33 baseball tournament.
