Gussie Marie Martelle, of Williamsburg, died Friday, May 15, 2015, at the age of 88.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon “Sarge” Martelle; her father and mother, Lorenzo and Anna Sabella Barbera, of Sciacca, Italy; and her brother, Salvatore Barbera.
Born in 1927 as Accursia Maria Barbera, she graduated from Bay Ridge High School, January 1945. Gussie was a member of Our Lady’s Rosary Makers for which she crafted handmade rosaries for distribution to people in the community. Gussie loved children and her family pets. She will be remembered fondly for her laughter, legacy and love for pizza.
Gussie was formerly of West Brighton in Staten Island, New York and served as a parishioner of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. She retired to Williamsburg where she lived with her daughter, Laura and son-in-law, Robert and was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church. She participated in the monthly Young at Heart luncheons and enjoyed visiting with her dear friends Minnie, Agnes, Joan, Maureen, Linda, Margaret and many more there.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Martelle Gucwa and her husband, Robert John; sons, James Martelle and his wife, Nancy nee Brian, Joseph Lawrence Martelle and John Martelle and his wife, Donna nee Benevento; grandsons, John-Michael Gucwa and his wife, Megan nee Nagel, Jeremy Edward Martelle, Dominic Joseph Martelle, Joseph Louis Martelle and John Joseph Martelle; granddaughters, Jenna Nicole Martelle, Stefanie Nicole Martelle, Danielle Martelle and her daughter, Gianna Calber, of New Jersey.
As per her wishes, Gussie will return home to Staten Island, New York, where she will be laid to rest with her husband and sister-in-law, Edith Brace, at St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton. A memorial Mass is scheduled for noon on June 20, 2015, at Sacred Heart Church, 981 Castleton Avenue. A private burial will follow services.
A memorial Mass is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on May 27, 2015 at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
The family extends a very special thank-you to the Spring Arbor Cottage Care Community for the dedication and support given to Gussie during her stay and to the United Methodist Respite Care Staff and Faith and Action.
In lieu of flowers, Gussie requested donations be made in her memory to the Benedictine Monastery, 31970 State Hwy P., Clyde, MO, 64432.
