The Tabb boys and girls track teams took command of the Conference 19 Outdoor Track and Field Championship to claim the title Monday.

Under hot and humid conditions at Bailey Field, Tabb's girls team finished in first place with 239 team points, blowing out second-place Smithfield by 151 points. Jamestown finished third with 79 points, while Grafton took fourth with 66 points.

Maya Hanks of Tabb helped pace the Tigers to victory, recording wins in both track and field events. Hanks took first in the 100-meter dash, as well as the long and triple jumps.

The Tabb girls controlled the middle and upper distances, with Emily Wright winning the 800-meter run and Lindsey Blanks taking first in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs.

Jamestown's Jordan Gravelle continued her strong season in the sprint events, winning the 200- and 400-meter dashes.

The boys team competition was more competitive than the girls competition, with the Tabb boys edging out Smithfield by 31 points. Similar to the girls contest, Jamestown took third and Grafton finished fourth.

Tabb had three boys win multiple individual events Monday. Allen Blair proved versatile, winning the 100-meter dash and long jump.

Baron Kieffer continued to assert himself as one of the best distance runners in the Bay Rivers District, easily winning the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Finally, Antwuan Hicks proved his jumping prowess, winning the high and triple jumps.

For Tabb coach Wendy Wilson, Monday's wins highlighted Tabb's effort to bring the individual athletes that make up the Tigers roster together as a team.

"Track can sometimes be an individual sport," she said. "At Tabb, we've been trying to support each other and work together. We had a lot of people willing to jump into events today that maybe isn't always their strongest just so they can help the team out."

Up next for Tabb, Jamestown and Grafton will be the 4A South Regional Championships, which will take place May 29 and May 30 in Milford.
