Lafayette's girls tennis team took down a short-handed Southampton team at home Tuesday during the Conference 25 quarterfinals.
In all, the 5-0 match took roughly 50 minutes to complete with Southampton fielding a five-person roster.
Before the singles matches began, Lafayette claimed a 1-0 lead after Southampton had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match due to being short a player.
Once play began, Tawni Hatcher of Lafayette was the first one off the court, winning in the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-1.
Hatcher was quickly followed by Robin Rosewelsh in the No. 3 singles match, who won 6-1, 6-0. Despite being 6-0, 6-0 Abby Johnson was one of the last matches to finish in the No. 4 singles match.
The No. 5 singles match was the final match to conclude as Lafayette's Isabelle Gareis won a 6-0, 6-3 decision.
Lafayette Coach Pat Thompson was pleased with her team's performance in the opening round of the conference tournament, especially being able to overcome hot and humid conditions.
"I was very pleased with how they played, especially with the heat," she said.
The Rams (8-4) will host the winner of the New Kent-Colonial Heights match in the Conference 25 semifinals on Wednesday. Lafayette defeated both teams during the regular season.
"We beat both of them before, but in this time of the season they could be improving just like we are," Thompson said. "We're looking forward to a rematch with whatever team we face."
