Behind a dominant pitching performance and a number of manufactured runs, York topped visiting Grafton, 8-3, Wednesday night.

Gabe Simmons allowed just one run over six innings to earn the win, helping the Falcons improve to 9-6 on the season.

“He changed speeds, located very well and the defense played very well behind him,” York Coach Rusty Ingram said. “When he came out, it was 8-1. He just really stayed within himself tonight, and located his pitches real well.”

While Simmons stayed busy keeping Grafton at bay, the Falcons took advantage of opportunities at the plate. After a dropped pop-fly plated the game’s first base runner, York used two consecutive bunts to put runners in scoring position.

David Brewster’s single, his first of two hits on the night, scored two runs to open the scoring.

York picked up where they left off in the second inning. Trey Kurtyka drove in two runs off a single, upping the Falcon’s lead to four runs.

“We didn’t press, we let the game come to us a little bit,” Ingram said. “We were relaxed and executed our skills.”

With Grafton still without a run, York tallied two more in the fifth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, a dropped infield pop-fly allowed two runs to score.

An inning later, a pair of wild pitches with the bases loaded allowed the final two runs of the night to score.

Ingram said he was pleased with his team’s opportunistic approach, and would like to see some consistency from his offense moving forward.

“High school kids are so inconsistent when it comes to offensive baseball. One day they’re banging it all over the park and take advantage of the opportunities,” Ingram said. “The next day they pop it up eleven times, so you never know what’s going to happen. That’s why it’s such a fun game.”

York travels to Jamestown for a Friday matchup with Jamestown. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Grafton returns home to host Warhill on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Grafton will also have a dedication ceremony for its new press box, built in memory of longtime coach Henry Connell.
