Health officials are warning York County residents a coyote has tested positive for the rabies virus.

Lois Gary with the Peninsula Health District said the coyote was found in the area of Hornsbyville and Rocky roads in Seaford.

Gary stressed the need to report any contact with the coyote to the health department by calling 594-7340. If you suspect your pet has been in contact with the animal, you should also report it, Gary said.

Health officials emphasized the importance of vaccinating all pets and enjoying wildlife from a distance, refraining from feeding wild animals such as coyotes, raccoons, skunks, foxes and other feral animals.

Gary said local homeowners associations and neighbors living around the area where the coyote was spotted will be notified of the rabid animal.
