Girls Soccer: Grafton Survives Wild Game Against Smithfield

Jackie Armstrong Grafton SoccerThe Grafton girls soccer team leaned on its offense to earn a wild 5-3 home win against Smithfield on Tuesday.

Smithfield jumped on Grafton (5-3) early as a ball-handling error led to a quick Packers score 15 seconds into the game. The Clippers answered back 10 minutes later with a goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1.

The game entered halftime knotted up at two goalsĀ apiece.

In the second half, Grafton’s Megan Barnard ripped a shot from a difficult angle into the upper-90 area of the net to put the Clippers up 3-2. Roughly five minutes later, Smithfield responded by scoring on a penalty kick.

The game-winning goal came from Barnard, who finished a free kick by Sophia Beaudoin to put Grafton up 4-3.

The win gives Grafton back-to-back wins for the second time this season, with an opportunity to extend its winning streak to three games Friday at home against York.

Van Dyke Hat Trick Leads York

Madison Van Dyke scored a hat trick to help lead York to an 8-0 victory against Bruton (1-7) on Tuesday.

The Falcons led the Panthers 3-0 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.

York (4-1-3) will host Grafton at 7 p.m. Friday, while Bruton faces a quick turnaround on the road against Jamestown at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Warhill Edges Poquoson

Warhill (4-3) won its third consecutive game as the Lions edged out Poquoson at home Tuesday.

The Lions will look to continue their winning ways against Tabb at 7 p.m. Friday.

Cape Henry Takes Down Hampton Roads Academy

Hampton Roads Academy suffered a 3-1 setback against Cape Henry on Tuesday.

Kellyn DeChirico scored off a Melina Gharbo assist for the Navigators.

HRA drops to 6-3 on the season and will take on Trinity Episcopal School on the road 4 p.m. Friday.
