Crews broke ground April 6 on a 5,500 square foot expansion of the Advanced Vision Institute, a project that will add an operating room, two laser eye surgery suites and a surgery center for eyes.
AVI’s new ambulatory surgery center will use state-of-the-art vision technology, scheduling flexibility and lower prices to make the experience better for patients, according to a news release from the James City County Office of Economic Development.
AVI has operated out of a building at 5215 Monticello Avenue since 2001. When the business opened, an expanded surgery center was always part of the plan, said Teresia Thorne, the administrative assistant for AVI.
She said the ambulatory surgery center will function like a “mini-hospital,” where people can “drive up to the front door, get out, walk in, have their surgery and get back in their car and go home.”
AVI had been sending patients to another site in the Williamsburg area for surgery but will no longer have to do that thanks to the surgery center. Work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
AVI opened its first location on Monticello Avenue in James City County in 2001. It is located next to the U.S. Post Office across the street from New Town, with a second location in Hampton.
