Jon P. Spinnanger, of Williamsburg and formerly of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, died April 14, 2015, at the age of 72.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judith; his son, Jeffrey P. and wife, Amy; his daughter, Deborah de Steuben and husband, Randy; and grandchildren, Jon “Mitch”, Jack and Andrew Spinnanger and Christopher, Jonathan and Kate de Steuben.
Jon, the third of four brothers, was born in Brooklyn, New York on Feb. 27, 1943, to Ruthe and Olaf Spinnanger. He grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey, attended high school at Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He and Judy moved to Williamsburg following completion of more than 30 years in government relations and sales for Verizon.
Jon was an avid organist, a prolific reader and writer and his list of civic and social involvements spans his entire adult life. He was a former member of the Pompton Reformed Church, a member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, a lifetime member of the Lions Club, served four years as councilman and eight years as mayor of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey and was regularly published in any of a number of newspaper op-ed pages in New Jersey, Virginia and Washington.
Beyond all the personal recognition and accolades he earned throughout his life, Jon’s legacy is rooted in the way in which he steadfastly embraced his friendships and responsibilities as a husband, father and grandfather.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015, at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers and mindful of his love of organ music, memorial contributions may be made to the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 215 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
