Despite Kayley Cox pitching seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits, Grafton’s offense was unable to find consistent rhythm during a 1-0 loss at Smithfield on Monday.
Grafton’s (6-2) offense struggled to figure out Smithfield pitcher Sydney Gay, who struck out 17 batters through seven innings of shutout softball. Jessie Sprouse and Kerstin Roth were the only Clippers to record hits on the day.
“We had too many strikeouts,” Grafton coach Vanessa Young said about her team’s performance. “We had runners in scoring position a few innings, but we couldn’t put anything together.”
With 6 1/2 scoreless innings in the books and a runner on third base, a Smithfield batter looped a ball over the short stop to bring in the game’s only run.
The Clippers will face a quick turnaround as they play a road contest against Bruton at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
