Emily Russell Martin, of Williamsburg, died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 5, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was 74.
Emily was born at Langley Field Air Force Base. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1958. In 1960, she earned her Secretarial Science Certificate from Richmond Professional Institute (presently VCU). Newport News was where she and her husband raised their children. She retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 21 years of service.
In her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at Bruton Parish Book and Gift Shop and she took great pleasure in her home and gardening. Emily had a special love for animals. She greatly loved her family, friends and neighbors. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church for over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister.
She is survived by Malcolm Martin, her husband of 53 years; her three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Lee Hart, of Virginia Beach, Heather and Paul Dillman, of Papillion, Nebraska and Lara and Tom Swirbel, of Davie, Florida; and six grandchildren, David Hart, Rachel Hart, Abigail Dillman, Shannon Dillman, Carolyn Dillman and Ashley Swirbel.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2015, at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newport News. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
Donations may be made to Dreamcatchers Therapeutic Riding of Toano or Heritage Humane Society of Williamsburg.
