Former Bruton High School football standout and Baltimore Ravens draftee Lorenzo Jamar Moore Taliaferro was arrested early Saturday after police say he drunkenly broke a window on a taxi in Williamsburg.

A Williamsburg Police officer in the area saw Taliaferro standing with some other people in front of College Delly at about 1:15 a.m. Saturday. The officer saw Taliaferro was yelling and swearing, according to Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department. The taxi then arrived, and the officer watched Taliaferro and the people with him enter the vehicle.

The officer then saw the group exit the taxi in the same spot. The taxi driver waved down the officer and reported Taliaferro as having continued to yell and swear inside the taxi. The driver told Taliaferro to leave the vehicle, at which point Taliaferro broke a window on the car with his hands, Riley said.

After receiving the report from the taxi driver, the officer approached Taliaferro.

“He was fairly intoxicated,” Riley said.

Taliaferro was placed under arrest and charged with misdemeanor destruction of property and public drunkenness. An ambulance responded to the scene to treat small cuts on his hands, and then he was taken to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. Nobody else was charged in the incident.

The Ravens signed the 22-year-old running back to a deal May 16 after he was selected in the fourth round of the NFL draft. His selection came after two years in South Carolina at Coastal Carolina University’s football program, where he earned All-American distinction in 2013 after leading the Chanticleers to a record-setting season.

Prior to attending Coastal Carolina, Taliaferro spent two years at Lackawanna Junior College in Pennsylvania. During his time at Bruton, he was voted to the Virginia High School Coaches Association’s all-state first team and to the VHSL’s all-state second team.

Correction: Taliaferro is accused of breaking the window by holding it with his hands. The story has been updated to reflect that.

Let’s see, “all-state first team” by Va. High School Coaches Association, arrested for being drunk in public and smashing out a taxi window? Quietly, does that mean he will be set free of any charges because of the need for setting an example for our local youth?
