A 22-year-old man accused of allegedly strangling and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman at a party in November 2012 at a James City County residence pleaded not guilty Wednesday.

A jury trial for Steve Benedict Casper is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 26 in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court.

Police believe Casper assaulted the woman and prevented her from leaving her room until she bit him and fled the residence. A grand jury indicted him in March on a number of charged connected to the incident — abduction, rape, forcible sodomy, attempted forcible sodomy, strangulation, sexual battery and three counts of object sexual penetration.

The victim did not require hospitalization following the alleged incident. She did not live at the residence where the incident was alleged to have occurred, though Casper did. He is now a Centreville resident.
