York softball, Lafayette baseball and Bruton boys soccer all win season openers, plus Garvey tournament results and pairings.
SOFTBALL
York 6 Warhill 5
Maddie Rogerson finished 3-4 at the plate with 4 RBIs, including a go-ahead 3-RBI homerun in the fifth inning as York held on to beat Warhill, 6-5, Wednesday. The Lions, led by Bridget Henzel (1-3, 2B, 2 runs), rallied for two runs in the final frame before coming up one run short.
BASEBALL
Lafayette 5 New Kent 3
Lafayette scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull away from New Kent and earn a 5-3 season-opening victory Wednesday afternoon. Daniel Blankenship pitched five innings of three-hit ball to earn the win, while Austin Cohn finished 4-4 from the plate with 2 RBIs to lead the Rams.
SOCCER
Bruton 1 Phoebus 0
Josh Copeman scored on an assist from Andrew Maeso in the second half to give Bruton’s boys soccer team a 1-0 win over Phoebus in the Panthers’ season opener Wednesday night.
Warhill 1 Nansemond River 0
Vicky Underwood’s goal on an assist from Lindsey Williams helped Warhill’s girls soccer as Warhill’s girls soccer team overcame Nansemond River 1-0 in their season opener Wednesday night. Lions coach Todd Williams added that his team got a great defensive effort from Shaye Doherty, Tammy Stauffer and Raven Sickal as well.
