James City County Police assisted members of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control search a county residence Thursday for charges related to moonshine, resulting in an arrest.

An ABC press release said authorities executed a search warrant and arrested 64-year-old Ronald Leroy Lassiter, a county resident, and charged him with five counts of possession of untaxed alcoholic beverages, five counts of sale of alcoholic beverages without a license and two felony counts of sale of alcoholic beverages while in possession of a firearm.

During the search, ABC agents seized three untaxed gallons of moonshine, four firearms, various taxed beers and spirits and more than $4,900 cash. The search came after a complaint led to the ABC Hampton Regional Office and Special Operations Division engaging in a year-long investigation.

Lassiter is currently being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail on a bond of $3,500, according to the news release.

The only difference between that moonshine and the stuff you buy at the state run liquor store is that the State didn’t get to tax it. I find it ironic that you can make beer and wine at home but if you take the same stuff and distill it you have now broken a dozen laws. 3 gallons of moonshine, come on. Its time to change this outdated law.

I agree with “Maria”. Certainly our law enforcement and tax dollars can be put to better use.

Get a handle of violent crimes before you bust an old man for a victimless crimes. Besides banning moonshine is ridiculous. You can make wine and beer at home, but liquor is taboo? This is outdated garbage from the prohibition era.

This enforcement isn’t about substances or safety, it’s about government tax revenues. Been that way for over a century

The Powers That Be wasted a year’s resources tracking down a man with 4 gallons of moonshine? Not like this man had a still in an apartment complex and was risking blowing up anyone besides himself… while we have meth labs next door to innocent people and percoset addicts dazingly driving on the roads with our children…
