With a bid for a presidential nomination behind him, Newt Gingrich has a new campaign that will make a stop in Williamsburg this week.
Gingrich, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, is now touring the country to promote his new fictional book, “Victory at Yorktown: a Novel.” He and his wife, Callista, will sign copies of their latest books at 2 p.m. Saturday at the William & Mary Bookstore in Merchants Square.
Gingrich collaborated with historian William Forstchen to write a fictional account of how Gen. George Washington seized an opportunity to strike a decisive blow against the British in Yorktown during the Revolutionary War.
In a review, Publisher’s Weekly called the book “exciting historical fiction, offering insight into just how close George Washington and the Americans came to losing the war.” The book was released Nov. 13.
Callista will promote “Land of the Pilgrim’s Pride,” an illustrated children’s book that follows her earlier book, “Sweet Land of Liberty.” The books, illustrated by Susan Arciero, follow Ellis the Elephant as he learns about each of the original 13 colonies. “Land of the Pilgrim’s Pride” was published on Oct. 1.
Gingrich most recently ran for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. While he won the primary in South Carolina, he came in second place in several other primaries and failed to get enough signatures to land on the primary ballot for Virginia.
He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1979, representing Georgia’s 6th district until his resignation in 1999. In 1994, Gingrich co-authored the “Contract with America,” which outlined the Republican party’s legislative intentions if the party took leadership of Congress for the first time in decades; the plan was successful, and the Republicans won.
Since leaving Congress, Gingrich and his wife have owned or partially owned several for-profit companies, including Gingrich Productions, an umbrella company for production of documentaries, books, audio books, voiceovers, photo essays and media appearances. The Gingriches live in McLean.
